lambda-Terms, Logic, Determiners and Quantifiers

چکیده
In this paper, a theory T H based on combining type freeness with logic is introduced and is then used to build a theory of properties which is applied to determiners and quantiiers. It is well known that mixing type freeness and logic leads to contradictions. For example, by taking the following syntax of terms: t := xjx:tjt 1 t 2 j:t and applying the term x::xx to itself one gets a contradiction (known as Russell's paradox). Church was aware of the problem when he started the-calculus which he intended to be a theory of functions and logic. But his rst theory of the-calculus was type free and so was inconsistent. The paradox could be described as follows: take a to be x:(xx ! ?). Then from Modus Ponens (MP), the Deduction Theorem (DT), and-conversion, we could derive Curry's paradox: 1:

Typed Hilbert Epsilon Operators and the Semantics of Determiner Phrases
The semantics of determiner phrases, be they definite descriptions, indefinite descriptions or quantified noun phrases, is often assumed to be a fully solved question: common nouns are properties, and determiners are generalised quantifiers that apply to two predicates: the property corresponding to the common noun and the one corresponding to the verb phrase. We first present a criticism of th...

On the semantics of determiners in a rich type-theoretical framework The variation of word meaning according to the context led us to enrich the type system of our syntactical and semantic analyser of French based on categorial grammars and Montague semantics (or lambda-DRT). The main advantage of a deep semantic analyse is too represent meaning by logical formulae that can be easily used e.g. ...

متن کاملGerman Quantifiers: Determiners or Adjectives?
In this paper, I address the categorial status of quantifiers and similar expressions in German. Traditionally, they are assigned either of two classes: determiners and adjectives. I argue that German quantifiers in principle are ambiguous and can be realized alternatively as determiners or adjectives. The categorial status is mirrored by the declension of attributive adjectives following these...
متن کاملA History of Quantification
Aristotle (384–322 BC), the founder of the discipline of logic, also founded the study of quantification. Normally, Aristotle begins a topic by reviewing the common opinions, including the opinions of his chief predecessors. In logic, however, he could not adopt the same strategy; before him, he reports, “there was nothing at all” (Sophistical Refutations 183b34–36). Aristotle’s theory dominate...
